(AF) is when the upper heart chambers (atria) quiver instead of pumping blood effectively. Blood in the atria may pool and clot. If a clot breaks loose and advances to the brain, a stroke can result.
The treatment for AF is based on factors related to the heart rhythm, symptoms, and other medical conditions.
Treatments for atria that pump too fast and irregularly (atrial fibrillation) is intended to:
- Regain and maintain a normal heart rhythm
- Control the heart rate or pulse
- Prevent a stroke
