Anal cancer, a very uncommon disease, is in which cancer cells are found in the anus. The anus is the opening of the end of the rectum. Cancer in the other parts of the anus is more common in men; cancer in the inner parts of the rectum is more common in women. If your anus if often red, swollen, and sore, you have a greater chance of getting anal cancer. Chances of recovery depend on the stage and location of the cancer. It also depends on the patient’s health.
You should visit a doctor if following symptoms appear: pain or itching in the anus region, bleeding from the rectum, or a growth near the anus.
If there are signs of anal cancer, a doctor will examine the anal region. This includes search of any lumps in the region. The doctor may decide to take a sample of tissue from the region to study it under the microscope to see if cancerous cells are present. This procedure is called a biopsy.
The choice of treatment depends upon the stage of cancer. Survival rate is higher if the cancer is diagnosed at an early stage.
